First edition with these illustrations, the issue in cloth (there was also a leather binding). 8vo, dark blue bevel-edged cloth elaboratedly decorated in blind and gilt, all edges gilt, cream endpapers. 136, [4, ads] pp. Small chip and light rubbing to tips of lightly darkened spine; some foxing in text, mainly early and late; soft corner crease to front free endpaper and illustrated half-title; 1968 ink inscription to front free endpaper; else a fine copy, covers bright, gilt unflaked, of this handsome Victorian illustrated book, with 40 illustrations. Leighton, Son and Hodge binder's ticket to rear pastedown. The half-title is by H.N. Humphreys, the rest of the drawings are by Birket Foster save one which is after Raphael. BAL 12427. First edition was Boston, 1849, and there was a British edition the same year. A semi-autobiographical novel involving a young New England Protestant minister who had converted from Catholicism.
