(2), xxvi, (27)-406, [4]; xii, (13)-397, (1, blank) + (2) pp ads + blank leaf. Six plates with tissue guards in each volume (12 in all ). Cloth slightly sunned at margins of covers; spines chipped at tips; page edges browned; considerable foxing in text and to plates, typical of American books of this period; VG tight pair otherwise, no owner names. Presumably, the first American edition with the Cruikshank illustrations. The UK edition was in 1833, also in two volumes. First edition in English was in 1716, and the first of the Smollett translation was in 1749.
