1855. George Lewis ("Louis") Becke (1855-1913), was born in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. A trader and adventurer in the South Pacific, he began his career as a journalist and writer in 1893, eventually publishing 35 books (six in collaboration with Walter James Jeffery), and enjoying literary fame in the 1890s. James A. Michener and A. Grove Day considered him to be the best writer about the South Pacific. Uniformly bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in half emerald morocco and marbled boards, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, bound-in ribbon markers, spines with raised bands, gilt decorations (ship, anchor, shell, fish), date at foot. Two blank leaves at front and at rear of each volume, all with half-titles except where noted. Spines evenly sunned to brown; slight darkening to margins of sides and leather corners; some small scuff spots to the leather inner margin of the sides of a few volumes (touched up); else fine, no chipping to the spines, no owner names, hinges and joints not cracked.
