THE PILLARS OF SOCIETY, and Other Plays. Edited, with an Introduction, by Havelock Ellis

Edition: First edition in English

London: Walter Scott, 1888. Original red cloth with front cover stamped in black, spine in black & gilt. pp (xxxii), 315, [1], (4, ads). Spine is a bit sunned, but gilt lettering bright; lower outer corner of front cover is bumped, causing two cloth creases on exterior and a crack to pastedown inside; bump to upper corners of rear cover; old ink owner name on front free endpaper; yellowing to page edges, text paper a bit toned, as usual; bit foxing to top page edges; else a VG clean, tight and unworn copy, internally fine, hinges not cracked. Interestingly, this copy was either a review or examination copy from the Canadian publisher and agent W.J. Gage, as it has their printed label on the front pastedown with the title hand written in ink, printed price of 35 cents. A later narrow shelf label is pasted over the center of the Gage label, but in the right light, one can read what's underneath. The present title is the last listed in the ads for The Camelot Series at the rear. Besides the title play, contains "Ghosts" and "An Enemy of Society" (now ususually titled "An Enemy of the People". All three are here first published in English in book form ("Ghosts" having previously published in a magazine, but revised for the book). Eleanor Marx Aveling translated "An Enemy of Society", and William Archer the other two. Note: light parcel, any default shipping may be reduced.; 16mo
