Byron was sent by the Admiralty to sail the South Atlantic to look for Pepys Island and the southern continent, and thence to the Pacific to look for a north-west passage. He didn't. Instead, he did a circumavigation, finding nothing more important than a rediscovery of the Falkland Islands.
