LETTERS ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE MIND, addressed to a young lady

Bound in contemporary calf, black spine label. pp [2, blank], 226, [4, blank] + frontispiece illustration (by J. Smith, dated 1803). Small private bookplate at front; corner crease and small tears to front free endpaper; corner crease and old ink gift inscription on front fly leaf; damp stain to frontispiece; shallow chip across head of spine; else a VG+ clean, tight and unworn copy, hinges not cracked. Hester Chapone was one of the Bluestockings associated with Elizabeth Carter and Elizabeth Montague (the dedicatee of this book). She was also a friend of Samuel Richardson, Frances Burney d'Arblay, and Gilbert White. Samuel Johnson published four of her pieces on women in The Rambler. This treatise on female education in the form of ten letters written to one of her nieces, was first published in 1773. It proved very popular and went through many editions. NCBEL II, 1598.
