Pp 384; frontispiece and 7 other full page illustrations included in pagination, title page vignette. 1899 prize bookplate at front; spine lightly sunned, with a bit of rubbing to gilt spine panel; small spots to front cover; slight rubbing to spine tips and outer corners; light spots to top page edges; in all, a good-VG copy; text clean, hinges not cracked. The title novella (in 7 chapters) is set in Australia: relations between Aborigines and colonists in 1849; action takes place near Lake Boga, Lower Murray River. Also contains the stories Captain Stauncy’s Vow, The Forged Will, and Just in Time: A Detective Story. Publisher’s preface states that this is the first in a new series of The Leisure Hour Library. That edition was first published [1887]. Hubin II p. 19 dates 1866. Not in Loder, though the Australian title story appears to be to have sufficient criminous content.
