Octavo, pp (iv), 346, (78, Index), (1, list of plates), (1), (2, ads), (2, binder's blank) + frontispiece portrait of Homer and a folding map; 12 vignette text illlustrations (including title page), tail pieces. Bound in contemporary paneled calf, spine with raised bands, gilt ornaments, spinkled page edges. Joints and hinges have been neatly repaired with rice paper; shallow chips to spine tips, spine gilt rubbed with spine label perished; front free endpaper has a vertical crease, old ink name; upper outer blank corner of dedication leaf clipped out, old patch, ink lettered on verso; ink ownership name at top margin of title page; endpapers yellowed, with margin browning from binding; scattered light foxing, but text is otherwise clean and unworn. In all, externally good, internally VG, now firm in the binding. The engraved illustrations are mostly by Gravelot. The first book of this Scottish classicist, published anonymously.
