Once the property of one Ivy Roberts, who has written her name large in black ink on the front cover and smaller in the top margin of the title page. Ms Roberts has also written a recipe in ink on the blank page 80 and in pencil on p. 77 (blank leaves are provided after each month's text for this purpose; spine lightly darkened with almost all of the red lettering rubbed away, two inch cloth tear to lower rear joint neatly repaired; large soil spots to covers, with cloth bubbling from damp to lower front cover; ink later owner name on front fly leaf; cracks to inner hinges neatly repaired; a large chunk torn from the fore margin of the rear endpaper has been neatly replaced with rice paper and coloured to match the endpaper; yellowing to page edges; occasional small soil spots in text but the large majority of the text is clean; in all, only a fair to good copy of this South African cookery and domestic economy classic, reprinted in facsimile by Macmillan in 1978. A sequel to her "Hilda's 'Where Is It?' of Recipes" (1891), which the Dictionary of South African Biography describes as "the first attempt to compile a recipe book for South Africans and to include traditional recipes from all the racial groups at the Cape'. Miss Duckitt has been called "The Mrs. Beeton of South Africa". The present month is arranged by months and contains not just recipes but notes on housekeeping. The only early printings were the two 1902 printings totaling only 2000 copies, which accounts for it being a scarce book today. A cornerstone of an African cookery collection.
