Some flaking to the white border of front cover and very slightly to some spine lettering; yellowing to page edges; only a few small tan spots in margins and two small corner creases; thumbnail-size lighter spot on rear cover; else a VG or better clean, tight & unworn copy, no owner names. Sherlock was a newspaper editor in ujpstate New York and the author of one other novel. An interesting story, set in the fictional "Smithboro", 50 miles from the Ontario border, in the early 1850s. The novel is about the Underground Railroad, Smithboro being a stop along the way even though a number of the locals were pro-slavery, Frequent use of the "n" word, negro dilalect. Murder of a slave girl, a detective. Contains a 5+ page appendix on the chronology of American fugitive slave laws. Made from sheets of the US (Stokes) edition. This Canadian issue is doubtless quite scarce.
