Edition: First Edition
Berlin: Friedrich Maurer, 1790-91, 1791. 16mo, three volumes. Third volume is ALLEGORISCHE PERSONEN ZUM GEBRAUCHE DER BILDENDN KÜNSTLER, als eini Anhang zu K.W. Ramlers kurzegefassten Mythologie. Nebst einem Register über das ganze Werk. Berlin: Maurer, 1791. pp (4), xvi, 368; 369-774; viii, (239). With 11 (of 14) copper plates (lacking 3 plates). Recently rebound in half dark blue-grey morocco with blue marbled boards, raised bands, grey-green endpapers, but no spine lettering. Old rubber stamp in Russian on verso of second leaf of volume one; damp stain to upper outer corners of third volume; occasional light foxing. A nice set otherwise, clean and unworn. The author explains in a note at the beginning of the second part that he had to enlarge the work by a few pages and has supplied a new plate which can be substituted or the original in the Jupiter section, which would perhaps explain why he says the book comes with 15 plates, while the list of plates calls for 14. Missing in this copy are the plates for Venus and Mars, Ceres, and Bacchus, and Pomona and Flora. > A book on classical mythology by this German poet who was from 1790-96 manager of the Royal Theatre. He was a friend of Lessing and Kleist and did many translations of classical poetry.
