Copperplate frontispiece and title page vignette in each volume, title pages in red and black. Vol. IV is PIECES DRAMATIQUES Choisies et restituées par Monsieur ***. [i.e., Rousseau] and includes plays by Corneille, Jean de la Fontaine, Rousseau, and others. First edition of that collection. OUEVRES DIVERSES was first published in 1712. Title labels perished, but volume number labels still present; spine gilt dulled; front joints broken, internally repaired with rice paper; browning from turn-ins to endpapers and early and late leaves; shallow chips to fore edges of free endpapers; in all, just good externally, front joints tender but covers now holding; text is very good or better, clean and unworn, text blocks solid. Rousseau, a witty epigramist, lyric poet, and playwright, spent most of his adult life in exile because o a libel suit he lost. Voltaire was his bitter enemy. He was very popular in his day.
