Cover duplicating title page illustration by Aubrey Beardsley, key device with "G.A." incorporated on rear cover, spine, and verso of title leaf, also by Beardsley. Fore and bottom page edges untrimmed. Spine has an indentation at centre, cloth creases at ends, bump to lower outer corners of covers; cloth bubble on front cover; page edges yellowed; front free endpaper has soft corner crease, 1896 ink name, minor foxing; in all, a VG tight and unworn copy. Long Introduction by Allen in which he talks about the difficulties of serial publication of novels, mainly the publishers' desire to avoid offense to any reader, and explains why he wants to call the novels in which he has a free hand and which see book publication first, his "hill-top" novels. A satirical novel exposing present-day societal defects by way of an anthropologist from the future who time travels to study what seems to him a savage tribe in an English suburb.
