McLachlan was born in Johnstone, Scotland, and emigrated to Canada in 1840, inheriting his father's land in Caledon Township, Ontario. He has been called "the Canadian Robert Burns". He sometimes wrote in Scottish dialect, as he did in a number of poems in this collection.
