IN THE VILLAGE OF VIGER
Edition: First printing
Boston: Copeland and Day, 1896. 16mo, light brown pictorial ribbed cloth stamped in brown, spine gilt lettered. pp , 135, . Mild rubbing to spine ends; small bump to lower outer corner of rear cover; light tan (tea?) stains to a number of leaves; VG unworn copy otherwise of the author's uncommon second book. A collection of short stories said to be a CanLit classic and reprinted in the New Canadian Library paperback series. An interesting essay on the publishing history of the book can be found in John Metcalf's KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS, where he convincingly proves that almost no copies were sold in Canada before the 1945 Ryerson edition and the modern paperback, so that it cannot have had any influence to speak of on the development of the Canadian short story, despite some academic claims to the contrary. Kraus, Copeland & Day, #42.
