DAME CARE. Translated from the German by Bertha Overbeck
Edition: First edition in English
New York: Harper, 1891. 12mo, original dark blue cloth decorated in silver, gilt lettered. pp (2), (315) + frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Just a mite leaned, minor rubbing to spine ends and corners; tidy ink name and two small pink spots on front free endpaper; tanning to page edges; else a near fine, bright copy. First published 1887 as FRAU SORGE, it was his first complete novel and the one which brought him fame as a novelist. A grim tale of East Prussian peasant life, it may be his best work. Sudermann dominated the German stage for nearly 20 years.
