"The saga of a semi-literate Italian who, in pursuit of that will-o-the-wisp of modernism, personal equality under the law, becomes involved in a series of incidents that transform the garish New York landscape into a storied fairyland. Roth, imprisoned for nine years for publishing "obscene" books, sold mild under-the-counter goods through the mails. He operated a bookshop in Greenwich Village. He also published portions of Joyce's ULYSSES in Two Worlds Quarterly. He was labeled a pirate by Mary Column and others, but in a 1945 letter to the New York Sun at the rear, he claims Joyce was paid for the work through Ezra Pound, his agent, and that it was the first substantial money Joyce ever earned for his work. Roth was the author of a notorious anti-Semitic book JEWS MUST LIVE (1933). Roth himself claimed to have been an Orthodox Jew all his life and wrote other books about Judaism which were not anti-semitic. An interesting guy, not without talent as a poet, and to some degree, unjustly persecuted by the literary establishment.
