SETTLERS OF THE MARSH
Edition: First Canadian issue
Toronto: Ryerson, 1925. Octavo, pp , 341, blue linen grain cloth gilt lettered. Mild wear to spine corners and outer corners; light yellowing to page edges and endpapers; spine gilt just a little dulled; light damp stain to lower outer corner of front pastedown (hidden by jacket flap); else a fine copy, no owner names. Dust jacket has a thumbrnail-size chip to upper corner of front panel with loss of part of final "S" in "Settlers"; shallow chips across ends of very lightly darkened spine, with rubbing at top with loss of part of "Settlers"; rubbing and small narrow hole lower on the jacket spine; some rubbing to flap and spine folds; VG otherwise, still attractive. FPG's first novel in English and the scarcest of his English language novels in first edition. "His first Canadian novel...begun in German but completed in English - was considered too frank for public taste in the 1920s and did not sell well. It has gradually won recognition, however, as one of the first works of prairie realism." Set in the Big Grassy Marsh district of Manitoba. A very difficult title to find in jacket.
