Edition: First Canadian Edition
Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1941. Second issue. Variant binding of unribbed maroon cloth lettered and ruled in gilt, top edge red. viii, 525, pp + frontispiece portrait. Yellowing to fore edges; lengthy 29 Aug., 1941, gift inscription on front free endpaper, small white spot to top page edges; else fine. The dust jacket has corner chips to ends of lightly tanned spine; rear panel has a small corner chip and a small abrasion; none of the defects affect any lettering; VG otherwise. This second issue adds three speeches (19 Dec., 23 Dec., 1940; 9 Feb., 1941) tipped in after p. 488 (where the text of the first issue ends). The table of contents reflects the additions. The title comes from his speech of 13 May, 1940, just days after assuming the office of Prime Minister, in which he memorably said (p 328) "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat."
