New York: Vanguard, 1947. Black cloth. Yellowing to page edges and endpapers, very small corner crease to four leaves, else fine. Dust jacket has shallow chips to ends of spine, which shows light yellowing to the white lettering; small chip at top of front panel, VG otherwise, flap price intact. First issue jacket with a blank rear panel. A novel based on his time at The Citadel, the famous Charleston, SC, military college, the first book by this unjustly neglected Georgia-born author who wrote some notable screenplays including those for Paths of Glory, One-Eyed Jacks, The Graduate, and Little Big Man.. The novel attacked the machismo with a touch of homoeroticism he experienced there, which drew a charge of obscenity against the publisher. There was a film version in 1957 titled The Strange One, starring Ben Gazzara and George Peppard. Young, the Male Homosexual in Literature 2832.
