Edition: First printing
Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1996. Page proofs. Quarto, white cerlox bound with light green non-pictorial paper covers, pp x, 470. Tiny tan spot on front cover, break to one ring of the cerlox spine; else a fine copy of one of her most acclaimed novels. It made the Booker Prize short list, was a nominee for the Governor-General's Award, and won Italy's Premio Mondello as well as the Giller Prize. We have seen another version of this quarto proof which used the colour art of the published jacket, with plastic protective sheet, for a front cover and red card for the rear cover. It gave a projected publication date of 07 Sept., whereas this version gives only September. It seems most probable to me that the present version is the earlier issue. Very scarce in this advance format, no doubt issued in a rather small number. The novel is based on the real person Grace Marks, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Upper Canada in 1846.
