Cream non-pictorial jacket with long statement by the publisher on the front panel and blurbs on the rear panel by Sybille Bedford, Marianne Moore, Robert Nathan, and various periodicals. Creasing to the cloth spine, light yellowing to page edges, near fine otherwise. Dust jacket lightly soiled and creased, VG. A first novel by this Scottish author and pioneer experimental film maker who was for many years married to the novelist Winifred Ellerman ("Bryher"). They both went both ways. He fathered a chld with her lover poet Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), which they adopted. In 1927 he and Bryher and Doolittle founded the Pool Group, which produced art films. While living with his male lover in Capri and financially supported by Bryher he took in the aged Norman Douglas and was the executor of his estate. Of the present novel, the editor says "The narrative races from the glittering salons and opulent villas of Italian society to the bizarre Roman underworld of cutthroat thieves, pimps, prostitutes, and dope-peddlers."
