He studied mathematics at Cambridge and Göttingen and completed this thesis while studying at the University of Chicago. He founded Carus Chemical Company in 1915, which became the world's largest manufacturer of potassiam permanganate (used as a disinfectant and also by naughty boys to turn people's swimming pool water pink), Carus having produced the chemical while an undergraduate at Wisconsin.
