THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. Translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R.F. Burton. Reprinted from the original edition and edited by... (12 volume set)
London: H.S. Nichols, 1894. "Library Edition". Twelve volume set, tall octavos, original black cloth elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. Cracked inner hinges neatly repaired with rice paper; some bumps to outer corners; some tissue guards creased, a few chipped or loose, a few wanting; page edges yellowed; nicks and soft creases to spine ends; volume 6 has cloth creases to lower half of spine; else a VG set, no owner names, tight in the bindings, gilt bright, attractive. The original Burton translation was privately published by the Kama Shastra Society in 10 volumes in 1885. (The Society had two members and was a legal device for avoiding prosecution for obscenity. The edition gave Benares as place of publication, but it was in reality published in Britain). The present edition "omits given passages in dreadful taste, whose elimination will be mourned by no one." It was not illustrated. Note: 12 kg parcel, extra postage WILL be required.
