London: Collins, 1937. Second printing of this noted white South African author's first novel, a story of the Great Boer Trek of 1836. Brown cloth. Spine very slightly sunned, else fine. Jacket has small corner chip and nick to dust soiled rear panel; quite minor rubbing, crease, to foot of spine; VG+ otherwise. When the English freed the slaves in South Africa in the middle of harvest, the Boer farmers lost their crops, so they mostly pulled up stakes and headed north to found the Orange Free State. Presumed export issue jacket with no flap price. This Oct. second printing dropped the endpaper illustrations found on the Sept. first printing.
