HAMILTON; and other poems and lectures

Printed by A. Lovell & Co, 1871. The second edition, enlarged (first was Toronto, 1840), adding a new author preface. Spine very slightly sunned with slight wear at head neatly repaired, scattered foxing in text, a bit leaned, VG otherwise. Stephens came to Canada from Northern Ireland as a boy and became the Collector of Customs in Owen Sound, Ontario. As a writer, he "became a public phenomenon by the ease and frequency with which he composed impromtu verses in an eighteenth-century manner. When the "Hamilton mountain" was set as a poetical 'task' for him by a lady about 1840, he opened on a description of Creation with unmated primeval creatures seeking companions." - Klinck (1st ed.) p. 152. Though a minor poet he was one of the earliest versifiers in Upper Canada. ; 12mo
