Boston: Charles C. Little & James Brown, 1839. Original green pebbled cloth, rebacked with brown cloth and new paper label. pp [2], (xxii), 248, [2]. Some foxing and toning throughout, as usual, old ink owner name in top margin of title page, VG clean and unworn copy otherwise. Pencil inscription from the author to Dr. Burklin, and Hiram Burklin’s name, on front free endpaper. Hiram Bucklin (1803-1845) was a Rhode Island physician in Valley Falls, Smithfield, RI. Armorial bookplate of Henry Parsons, and label of the Nathan & Rose Benison Memorial Library, on front pastedown. >>> At time of publication, Parsons was late professor of anatomy and surgery at Brown University (1823-28), an honorary member of the Massachusetts and South Carolina medical societies, and President of the Rhode Island Medical Society. He served with distinction and some fame as a surgeon with Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and eventually obtained an M.D. from Harvard. He married the sister of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Parsons was an organizer of the American Medical Association and a founder of Rhode Island Hospital. He was a pioneer in the understanding and treatment of spinal curvatures. See Goldowsky, Seebert J.
