A collection of short stories said to be a CanLit classic and reprinted in the New Canadian Library paperback series. An interesting essay on the publishing history of the book can be found in John Metcalf's KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS, where he convincingly argues that almost no copies were sold in Canada before this 1945 Ryerson edition and the modern paperback, so that it cannot have had any influence to speak of on the development of the Canadian short story, despite some academic claims to the contrary. Lastly, the present copy has the ink ownership signature of John Metcalf.
