Edition: First printing

New York: R.F. Fenno, 1901. Maroon buckram lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges rough trimmed, illustrated title page printed in green & black, pp [2], 268, [4] + 6 plates. Decorative initials and tail pieces. Endpers browned; shallow chips and tear to fore edge of brittle rear free endpaper; rubber stamp at front; inner hinges neatly repaired with rice paper; yellowing to page edges; else a VG clean, tight and unworn copy. The b&w plates are by a fairly important Hamilton, Ontario, artist, alleged the first Canadian to use the pointillist technique (though not here). The initials and tailpieces by Bartle are particularly appealing. Adeline Teskey lived most of her life in Welland, Ontario. A collection of 10 fictional sketches, in the manner of the Kailyard school of Scottish fiction, of the village of "Mapleton", Ontario, which may have been based on her birthplace of Appleton, Ontario. This was her first and most popular book, of seven. ; Octavo
