Cracked front joint neatly repaired, now sound; Browing from binding to margins of endpapers and binder's fly leaf front and rear; VG otherwise, text clean, tight, fine. Armorial bookplate at front of Sir Abraham Hume, Bart. with ink name at top of Lady Amelia Hume. Both Sir Abraham and Amelia Egerton Hume were keen cultivators of roses. Their friend Joshua Reyolds painted her portrait. The first major variorum edition, containing the first bibliography of the work (pp 193-99). A scarce book.
