Cambridge: Printed by J. Bentham, Printer to the University, for W. Innys, A. Ward, [et al], 1744. Two volumes, octavo (20 cm). pp (2), xxxvi, (42, .subscribers list), 424, (16, Index); (2), 446, (24, Index). Contemporary calf with gilt-tooled armorial devices on the front covers, page edges dyed red; complete with the list of subscribers, portrait frontispiece, and sixteen engraved plates after William Hogarth by Mynde, six of which are folding. ESCT T2679. The first printing of Zachary Grey’s edition of the text, with his preface and extensive annotations, "the best edition" according to Dibdin and Lowndes. Of added interest are the sixteen lively plates from Hogarth. First edition to contain the Preface and Annotations by Grey; the Hogarth illustrations appeared in earlier editions (first in 1726) but were re-engraved for this edition. Spines worn - chipped, with vertical cracks, parts of the labels on Volume I lacking; joints repaired with rice paper, covers now holding but a little tender; contents with occasional faint spotting and toning, but generally very clean, bright and crisp, with fine impressions of the plates. Front pastedowns with the armorial bookplate of Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Earl of Wharncliffe; penciled notation and old bookseller’s catalog clipping tipped in. 2 kg parcel; Octavo
