Boston: Houghton, Osgood, 1879 (for 1878). Unrecorded vairant, apparently. Terra cotta bevel edge cloth, spine gilt lettered, brown endpapers. pp [6, blank), (2, title), 1-281, [7, blank]. Spine darkened, with a bit of wear at ends; a little leaned; armorial bookplate of Howell Wharton Bickley (1842-80) at front, with "Bickley, 1908, Walnut St."on front fly leaf and title page; text paper a bit yellowed, as usual; inner hinges repaired, with brown coloured rice paper used at front; VG otherwise. The London edition, in a two volume format, preceded by about a month. E&L A7b. Edition of 1500 copies. Supino 7 and BAL 10536 state there were three impressions in 1879; the easiest way to distinguish them is to note the presence or absence of blank leaves at front and rear. The first impression should have two blanks at front and two at rear. This copy, with three blanks front and rear, is not accounted for.; 12mo
