THE AMBASSADORS: a novel

Edition: First US printing

New York: Harper, 1903. Page edges yellowed, Xmas, 1904, ink name at front, else a fine copy. Dust jacket has light damp streaks to front panel, discoloured at flap folds, VG otherwise. E&L A58b, first issue binding. Edition of 4k copies. BAL 10656. Supino 58.6.0 believes that, contrary to E& L and BAL, there was only one binding state, but I think he may be wrong about that. Of special interest regarding the American text, Chapters XXVIII and XXIX are in reverse order, and are likewise that way in the New York Edition. The error was not noticed by scholars until 1950. The UK text was correct. There a numerous other textual differences between the two. His last great novel and the one he thought his best. Connolly, The Modern Movement 16: "One of James' few novels in which European values are clearly shown as preferable to American....Besides being his supreme offering to Paris, his renunciation of Puritan America, it is the book in which he considered the form most completely wedded to content." A lovely copy in the sturdy 1903 dust jacket. ; Octavo
