PETERLEY HARVEST: the private diary of David Peterley now for the first time published
Edition: First Canadian issue
Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1963. Green cloth, red top page edges. pp (286), [2]. Red top edges lightly sunned with a small light spot, soft corner creases to front free endpaper, else fine and bright. Dust jacket (design by Frank Newfeld) has yellowing and light spotting to spine; tiny chp to front panel; rear panel has a shallow chip along top edge and a small red mark; VG otherwise. A literary hoax. The 1960 Hutchinson UK edition was withdrawn by the publishers at the request of Mrs. Pennington. Presented as selections from the diaries of one David Peterley, recording literary and political events from 1926-1939, from a manuscript in McGill University Library in Montreal. There is no such manuscript- the whole thing is fiction written by the University's head librarian Richard Pennington. This first state of the Canadian issue has a cancel title leaf, and one cancel leaf in text (text rather different from UK text). Also, the bogus frontispiece portrait was dropped.; Octavo
