Scott was born in Woodstock, Ontario, where he attended Woodstock College and then from 1901-04 the Royal Military College in Kingston. He accepted a captain's commission with the 21st Battalion, C.E.F., in 1914 and served in Belgium, eventually attaining the rank of Major. He moved to New York City in 1916, where he remained for the rest of his life. Turning to the writing of crime novels and short stories, he created Aurelius Smith, ex Secret Service, amateur detective with an interest in the supernatural.
