Montreal: Privately Printed (House of Seagram), 1941. The deluxe issue. Red bevel edge padded leather gilt lettered with colour label (arms of Canada) at centre of front cover, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, bound-in ribbon marker. pp xxxi, (265) + 10 colour plates with captioned tissue guards; 21 b&w illustrations and 9 vingnette colour maps in text, b&w illustrated endpapers. A fine copy. Signed by Leacock at the end of his Foreword (p xxx). Spadoni A92a. Illustrations by James Crockart, Charles W. Jefferys, Ernet Neumann, H.R. Perrigard, W.J. Phillips, Stanley Royce, A. Sherriff Scott, T.M. Schintz, and F.H. Varley. Uncredited Introduction by A.M. Klein. There were 300 - 400 copies "in all likelihood" (Spadoni) of this deluxe issue, out of about 8 k copies of the first printing. The books was reprinted 11 more times without so indicating. The trade edition (in two shades of blue cloth) was given away free to anyone who asked by the Montreal liquor giant Distillers Corporation - Seagrams Ltd. By 1967, 165 k copies had been distributed, accounting for its extraordinary commonness today. However, this deluxe edition has never been very common in the trade. Some copies were additionally signed and often inscribed by Seagram's President Samuel Bronfman. A nice copy of a nice book. 1.55 kg parcel; Quarto; Signed by Author
