DR. JONES' PICNIC

Edition: First Edition

San Francisco: The Whitaker & Ray Co, 1898. Blue pictorial cloth stamped in black and silver, yellowish floral endpapers. pp (iii)-(viii), 177. Title page & terminal blank tanned (offset from acidic endpapers); a few faint, scarcely noticeable spots, to front cover; yellowing to page edges; else a fine, bight cover, no rubbing to cover stamping, vulnerable inner hinges not cracked, an exceptional copy. Dr Samuel E. Chapman (1840-1930) was a Cleveland, OH, homeopath and physician who moved to California in 1877. This, his only book, is a fantastic tale of a voyage to the North Pole in an aluminum orb named Silver Cloud (which is pictured on the front cover). Along the way he cures cancer. After its successful voyage and retun to Washington, D.C., it sets out for the South Pole. "Eccentric novel. It uses the fictional techniques of Jules Verne and Frank Stockton, but its prime purpose seems to be propaganda for an extreme version of homeopathic medicine and Fundamentalist religiosity . A curiosity, and an irresponsible one at that." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years p 410. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-41 and (1981) 1-40. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 152. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Bleiler (1978), p. 42. Reginald 02871. Wright (III) 988. A lovely copy of this very scarce Arctic novel. Also noted in red cloth.; Octavo
