New York: Coward McCann, 1938. Brown cloth, blue on white spine and cover labels, blue top page edges, blue and brown on cream pictorial endpapers. Bit of spine sunning, light sunning to margins of covers; small rubbed spots to spine label, VG clean and unworn otherwise, internally fine. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title page "For H. Klyne Headley: with regards and best wishes--and thanks again for the music you shared with us at the MacDowell Colony this summer--Thornton Wilder / New Haven Conn. Aug. 1940". With Headley's ink Santa Barbara ownership inscription at top of dedication page, with his rubber stamped name and hand-written ink personal library number at bottom of front pastedown, entirely hidden by the jacket flap, and with Osborne's Book Store, Santa Barbara, gilt ticket at rear. Hubert Klyne Headley, teacher, composer, pianist, and conductor of the University of California Symphony in Santa Barbara, had just completed his California Suite for orchestra for the inauguration of the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. He had been invited to perform at the MacDowell Colony in 1940, and it was no doubt excerpts from his California Suite that Wilder referred to. Now in a facsimile first issue dust jacket, which is as new. A winner of a Pulitzer Prize and one of the most famous plays of the American theatre, performed countless times in schools and by amateur and professional companies. It was also the basis for the 1940 Sam Wood film featuring William Holden, Martha Scott, Fay Bainter, and Beulah Bondi. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Scott for Best Actress, and Aaron Copeland for the score.; Octavo; Signed by Author
