THE GOLDEN APPLES
Edition: First UK
London: Bodley Head, 1950. Said to be (by Author Price Guides) an unindicated second printing in red boards, spine lettered in black, no spine imprint, plain top page edges. Yellowing to page edges, boards just a mite bowed, narrow bands of sunning to spine ends, else fine. Dust jacket has shallow chips to ends of lightly darkened and faded spine with the red lettering almost invisible, small chips and nicks to upper edges of panels, small soil spot on front panel, rear panel lightly yellowed; VG otherwise, flap price intact. A collection of linked stories set in her native Mississippi. There were only 3450 copies of the first printing, in brown cloth. I have serious doubts that this is an actual second printing and not a secondary issue using sheets of the first printing, as only 1799 copies of the first were sold before it was remaindered, with 1175 copies being still unbound. Note: the half-title leaf was used as a front pastedown. In any event, the UK edition is uncommon.; Octavo
