(Toronto): Dodge, 1907. Red pictorial cloth stamped in white, gilt lettered. pp [4], (2), [7] + colour frontispiece with tissue guard. Front cover has a very small red spot to the broken bowl at centre and a damp spot to lower outer corner; very lightly darkened spine has a couple very small damp spots and a very narrow dark streak; rear cover has damp spots to inner margin; cracked inner hinges very neatly repaired; slight yellowing to page edges; small 1984 ink name in corner of front free endpaper; else a VG+ clean, bright and tight copy. Cancel title leaf states "Second Edition, Tenth Thousand, Canadian Edition". Dreiser's first novel, considered his masterpiece, it is " about a young woman who moves to the big city where she starts realizing her own American Dream. She first becomes a mistress to men that she perceives as superior, but later becomes a famous actress. It has been called the 'greatest of all American urban novels'." - Wikipedia. Partially set in Montreal. First published by Doubleday and McClure in 1900 in an edition of 1008 copies, Doubleday's wife objected to the book so it was not promoted and only 456 copies were sold. The text of this second edition was somewhat altered. A very scarce issue of one of the great American novels. ; Octavo
