Sitting Bull, fleeing across the Canadian border in 1876 after Little Big Horn, met with Superintendent James Morrow Walsh of the North-West Mounted Police (later, the RCMP) and a peaceful arrangement was made and more or less honoured. The Mounties were hopelessly outnumbered by the Sioux but used their heads and Sitting Bull's stay in Canada was not marred by further warfare.
