MEN OF GOOD WILL.
Edition: First UK edition
London: Lovat Dickson, 1933-36, 1936. 8 volumes, all first UK editions. Red cloth, spines gilt lettered, red top page edges. The first 10 books (first and last volumes each contain two books) of a sequence that eventually ran to 18 books in 12 volumes in the UK edition, which was left i ncomplete. The US edition, the full sequence, was published 1933-46, 27 books in 14 volumes. The present set comprises all of the volumes published by Lovat Dickson. Note: Volume 8 (Books IX-X) is from US sheets with the two title leaves (US design) inserted. Peter Davies published Books 11-18 in a further 4 volumes 1937-40. Books I-VI in the UK edition were translated by Warre B. Wells, and Books VII-X by Gerard Hopkins. Volume One (Books I-II) has some rubbing to inner top page edges, faint sunning to upper corner of front cover, faint spotting to fore edge of text, yellowing to fore edges, else fine. Its jacket has pink spots to rear panel not visible internally; chips and tears to head of spine (no lettering lost); short tears, tiny corner chips, tanning; VG otherwise. The other seven volumes all have sunning to the top page edges, two have endpaper tanning from the binding, but are otherwise fine. Their cream jackets are uniformly mildly tanned to the spines, some with very light tanning to rear panels, a few edge nicks here and there, fingernail size chip (no lettering affected) to head of spine of Volume 8; otherwise the jackets are fine or very nearly so, with flap prices intact, and this is in the main an unsually nice set. All the jackets and all the title pages (but for Volume 8) are illustrated by REX WHISTLER. The author's masterpiece and one of the monuments of 20th century European literature, this long sequence of novels depicts the social life of every class in France (with occasional incursions into other European countries) from 6 Oct., 1908 - 7 Oct., 1933, providing a detailed background to the Great War and with some memorable scenes from same. The edition originale was published 1932-46, as LES HOMMES DE BONNE VOLONTE. Note: 5.5 kg parcel, extra shipping will be required.
