The volumes were issued quarterly starting 1 July, 1844, and this volume would have been scheduled for 1 Oct., 1846. 21 volumes were eventually issued by 1849. According to NCBEL III 736 the novels were revised and corrected by the author, with a new author preface, for the collected edition; however, there is no new author preface in this copy. First edition was in 1841 (3 volumes). Edgar Allen Poe panned the novel in an 1841 revies.
