Volume I treats the quadrupeds and birds, Volume II reptiles, fish, insects, and shellfish. Volume III covers plants and minerals. The b&w aquatints, by William Daniell (1769-1837), an important British landscape and marine painter and engraver, are especially interesting for their full frontal realism, if distorted scale, against dramatic backgrounds. His book on India, ORIENTAL SCENERY, is highly prized. William Wood, F.R.S., F.L..S., who trained as a surgeon, turned to natural history and then to bookselling, becoming the leading London natural history bookseller of his day. This is the binding variant in rougher cloth with front stamped in blind, one of 1390 copies mainly designated for the circulating libraries. There were also 2150 copies in smooth cloth. Sir Max's famous comic novel of student life at Oxford University, perhaps The Great Oxford Novel.
