Willard Huntington Wright (a.k.a. crime novelist "S.S. Van Dine") as editor of The Smart Set proposed that he, HLM, and Nathan do a series of articles on the great gay cities of Europe for the magazine. Mencken wrote the preface, "Munich", and the first and last parts of "London". According to HLM "Due to the fact that is was published in 1914, just before the war, the book was a complete failure and was soon remaindered." This was Wright's first book and it was the first book to be illustrated by the notable artist Thomas Hart Benton. Vienna, Munich, Berlin, London, Paris. Only 610 copies had been sold by 31 Dec., 1916.
