Spine gilt slightly dulled but distinct; nicks to cloth at foot of spine; April, 1864, ink name to front free endpaper; quite small corner creases to a few leaves; else fine. BAL 20413. "L'Envoy" listed at page 501 on page 4 of contents (probable first printing correctly listed it at page 503) and printer's imprint on verso of title as in BAL's first two (of 3 for sure, maybe more) printings, with no mention of Rand & Avery. Text bulks one inch. Though BAL notes 5 cloth variants in various colours and one wrappers binding, this copy is yet another variant not noted by BAL - green horizontally fine ribbed cloth (BAL's BF cloth). >>>John Townsend Trowbridge (1827-1916), was a Boston author who "wrote some 40 novels for boys, which had much to do with raising juvenile literature from didacticism to a higher plane. The best known of his books are the antislavery novels CUDJO'S CAVE, written for children, and NEIGHBOUR JACKWOOD." - Oxford Companion to American Lit., 4th ed., which also has a separate entry for CUDJO'S CAVE. Three line rubber stamp to front pastedown and four digit number to rear pastedown, the front stamp mostly hidden by jacket flap, the rear stamp entirely so. Jacket has minor rubbing to only faintly yellowed spine, nick to rear panel and front flap, else fine and bright, flap price intact, a very nice copy indeed, scarce in this condition. A yarn set in Elizabethan times. Young orphan Dick goes to sea, has adventures in the Spanish West Indies, and returns home to do a good dead.
