Original paper covers bound in. pp [2], iv, (263); [4], [288] pp + 8 etchings with tissue guards, title pages printed in red & black. Vol I: frontispiece portrait and 4 plates. Vol II: 3 plates. Bindings have light sunning and light scuffing to spines; some rubbing to the marbled boards; foxing and tanning to the original wrappers; only occasional light foxing in text; in all a VG tight and handsome set of this illustrated edition. This novel was first serialized in "Le Bien public", 11 Dec. 1877 to 4 April, 1878 , and it was the first of his novels to be translated and published in English (Philadelphia, 1878, as Hélène: A Love Episode).
