London: John Murray, 1839. "New Edition" (first was in 1838). Tall octavo. pp (xx), 440, [2] + frontipiece and vignette title + 11 other tinted lithographs. all with tissue guards.Vignette engravings in text. Fore edges rough trimmed. Half black and green cloth. Old inept rebacking. Title portion of original spine lettering mounted; gilt dog on front cover and stag on rear cover clipped from original binding and mounted. Endpapers are of black glossy oil cloth. The front free endpaper has been attached to the verso of the half-title leaf; at rear attached to the verso of the blank. Front free endpaper has a small corner chip; front inner hinge repaired with black paper; dark brown stain about one inch by a half inch to upper inner corner (blank area) of the frontispiece and likewise to the vignette title (which also has some light fingering to lower portion and a light damp stain to upper outer corner); the last plate also has the stain in the upper margin; occasional light foxing, mostly to margins and versos of plates but some have a bit in the image. The haf-title is covered with a 1921 nk inscription from one Freemason to another; ink owner inscription of (???) Moore, Captain, 69th Regiment, Malta, 1850; Capt. Moore has again inscribed the upper portion of the title leaf; at bottom is an ink inscription in the hand of the gifting Freemason attesting that much of the data is applicable to the Red Deer of the Adirondacks, which he has hunted and knows well. Finally, Capt. Moore has again inscribed the top margin of the first page of the Preface. In all, just a good copy though the text is clean and unworn. The work is "Illustrated with Engravings and Lithographs, after Paintings by Edwin and Charles Landseer, Esqrs., and by the Author". The frontispiece, "A Forest Joust", is by Edwin Landseer, engraved by Thomas Landseer, as is the vignette title (six dogs). All but one of the other plates are after Charles Landseer. For this second edition some slight changes in the text have been made, the plate of deer antlers added, some improvements were made in the frontispiece, and the lithographs were re-touched. A sporting classic. Note: 1.5 kg parcel, extra postage may be required.

Hunting and hawking run throughout medieval art and literature, providing not only narrative motifs for tapestries, romances and sagas but also metaphors for war and combat, for Christianity wrestling with the dark forces of paganism, and for sexual pursuit and conquest. Dr Cummins' book ranges over a dazzling diversity of sources - poems, ballads, letters, court directives, royal accounts, gamekeepers' handbooks, psalters - to recreate and interpret the cosmos of medieval hunting and falconry, the skills and techniques, superstitions and beliefs. Richly illustrated from a variety of sources, "The Hound and the Hawk" shows us a pageant of medieval and Renaissance life lived in its grandest, most flamboyant, most allusive manner. "
