The first work, first published in Florence in 1668, is one of the most important books in the history of science (Horblitt 100 Books Famous in Science, #88). With it, he disproved the theory of the spontaneous generation of insects. Redi was a distinguished Italian naturalist and poet.

Thomas Adolphus Trollope (1810-92), was the elder brother of Anthonly Trollope. He was prolific and was a good writer, unustly neglected today. The present edition is scarce.
