"The first complete English translation of the 19th-century Yiddish classic." A satire of Hasidic life first published as a serial in an Odessa Yiddish magazine in 1867, first published in book form in 1868, and reprinted many times up until 1939. It was the most famous Yiddish book of its day.

This noted Jewish-American playwright and journalist's first book in English, produced in a German translation from the Yiddish by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1910. Lewisohn, in his introduction, calls this "the first play of the modern Jewish theate to be offered to an English reading audience." He also published novels, a collection of short stories, and other plays. An important figure in modern Yiddish literature.
